More About Gary Straub

Originally from Lancaster, PA, Gary migrated to the Mid-South, where he earned his education, served congregations, and now writes and resides in Louisville, Kentucky. Straub’s theological education spans the spectrum from an undergrad degree at Ozark Bible College, to a Masters in Pastoral Care and a Doctorate in Pastoral Counseling from Vanderbilt Divinity School.

Meadows

Meadows are moveable feasts. Memorable medleys of soothing sights and sounds. Meadows might even disguise Divine Invitation: to hit pause… Catch up with your breath…Shed your shoes … and now: Scamper —as mobility allows!
Meadows may afford us a kind of “time—out”— to take eternity in.
I’ve lived on a meadow most of my life. Once I spray for chiggers, I am up for an adventure—even if it’s just: “Sit! Now stay!”
Will you listen to those grasses grow?
Once I recalibrate my inner rhythms and dial back inner argumentations, ONLY THEN am I ready to tune my heart to nature’s noise.
Then, as I settle into quiet…. peaceablity finds me.
Friends inquire: “so, you’ve never met a meadow you didn’t like, right?” Never have! I do feel the tug to meander…to marvel… to muse.
After all, musing costs us nothing!
All we pay… is attention….

Meadows

Because I live on a meadow, I try to dial down my noise and tune into nature’s pace. Admittedly, I’m not tuned to the “Higher Serenity Levels”—those who hear grass grow. BUT THAT SAID: I’ve never met a meadow I didn’t like and feel the tug to meander, marvel, & muse.

Wasn’t it The Fed that said? “musing costs the economy nothing!”  Well…. All we pay… is attention!

Whatcha Reading Rev?

During Miss Sterns’ 1st grade Reading Hour, I sat close, leaned in, smelled the perfume, and dedicated myself to earnest effort; knowing the only thing that rivals reading, is being ‘in love’ with your 1st grade teacher; who sadly abandoned us to marry at Christmas! We were left bereft! What to do? I kept my nose in a book.

Mrs Sweet, my S.S. Teacher, delighted to mis—quote the Bible. She often skipped or changed words. Her errors energized us pupils. Our mission: 1) Correct her mis—guided theology. 2) Re-arrange her fanciful flannel—board stories to align w/ the Good  Book. Only after we were ‘properly promoted’ to the Junior Dept. did her deliberate errors tumble out! Mighty Sly, Mrs Sweet.

I’ve worked to overcome obstacles, distractions, & build vocabulary. Grad school reading @ 500pp /night not uncommon. Staying awake to cogently summarize became the challenge. I improved comprehension. Now— retention becomes the bear.

Revs who read are a ton more fun to follow when sermonizing. SO—make reading a daily Heart Habit! My method: grab coffee, sink my teeth into the biggest hunk of Scripture/theology I can find, tear and chew, pray thru, and digest! SO: read yourself full, pray yourself empty and preach your heart out. You will find nsights that sparkle and elicits enthusiasm so you have something to say worth hearing.  Not in the pulpit—just— wherever you are preaching these days.
